FAQ
FAQ
Q: How much finished alcohol will I get from one batch?
A: Output depends entirely on your input wash ABV. A 20% ABV wash will
produce more finished alcohol than a 10% ABV wash from the same still.
You cannot claim a fixed output. The VEVOR distills whatever you put in—
the efficiency (ABV recovery %) varies by use case (stripping vs. spirit run).
Q: How long does one batch take?
A: Heating time varies depending on ambient temperature and starting liquid
temperature. Total time from filling to finished batch depends on wash type
and ABV. Heating the boiler, running the distillation, and collecting output
will vary with conditions.
Q: Can I make high ABV spirits?
A: Output depends on input ABV. The 750W element is powerful and excellent
for stripping runs (converting low-ABV wash into high-proof raw spirit).
For refined spirit distillation, use a temperature controller to smooth
out the heating cycles and improve quality.
Q: Do I need a water pump or cooling system?
A: No. The VEVOR air still is air-cooled. Just plug it in. The electronic
fan and aluminum radiator do all the cooling work.
Q: Should I upgrade to a glass collection jug?
A: Yes, highly recommended. The included plastic jug works, but plastic can
leach subtle flavors into high-proof spirits. A 1L Pyrex or glass jar
collects the distillate perfectly and produces cleaner results.
Q: What's the difference between this and Still Spirits air still?
A: Both are 4L air stills with similar output. VEVOR costs less; Still
Spirits costs ~3x more. VEVOR is solid for beginners/intermediate;
Still Spirits is popular among serious hobbyists. Not 3x better—mostly
brand loyalty and build quality.
Q: Can I make whiskey with this?
A: Yes, but it's a pot still, not a reflux still. Your whiskey will have
more "flavor" and "character" than high-proof reflux whiskey. Many
prefer the taste. Age the spirit in oak to round out flavors.
Q: Can I make gin?
A: Yes. Infuse botanicals in a neutral spirit, then distill for a clean gin.
Q: What wash should I use?
A: Use our fermentation calculator to determine the right wash type for your spirit.
Q: How do I clean it between batches?
A: 1. Let it cool completely
2. Empty any remaining liquid
3. Fill with water, run a "water distillation" cycle (flushes internals)
4. Use included cleaning powder for mineral buildup
5. Rinse thoroughly
6. Air dry or wipe dry before next use
Q: Can I distill water with this?
A: Yes, absolutely. It's equally good for water distillation. Same specs
apply—produces very clean, pure water. Popular for humidifiers, labs,
and drinking water.
Q: Can I control the temperature precisely?
A: No. The VEVOR has only an on/off switch—no temperature control built in.
The element heats at full 750W until an internal thermostat cycles it off,
creating thermal surging (drips fast, then slow, repeat).
For any temperature control and smooth, consistent distillation, use an
external temperature controller. This is essential if you want good results.
Cost: ~$50–100 for a good controller.
Q: Is this a reflux still?
A: No. It's a pot still (simple distillation). Reflux stills are more
complex and produce higher-proof spirits. The air still produces
flavorful pot still spirits, which many prefer for character.
Q: Will this produce high-proof neutral spirits?
A: Up to 60% ABV before dilution, but you won't achieve the purity of
reflux distillation. For neutral vodka, you'll need a reflux still or
multiple distillations through this unit.
Q: What's the drawback of air cooling?
A: Slower distillation times and less efficient heat rejection than
water-cooled stills. But for home batches, this is not a problem.
Q: Can I re-distill spirits to make them smoother?
A: Yes. You can take spirits from the first run and distill again to remove
sulfides/flavors and increase proof. Each re-run gets cleaner.
Q: Do I need copper packing mesh?
A: No. But you can add a copper scrubber directly to the pot during a spirit
run to help remove sulfides (rotten egg/match strike flavors). Optional.
Q: Is this safe?
A: Yes, with proper use. The automatic thermal shutdown (>115°C) prevents
overheating. Never seal the boiler (always leave vented). Never leave
unattended while hot. Follow all included safety instructions.
Q: Where is it made?
A: VEVOR is a Chinese manufacturer. Products are widely available in
Australia, US, EU, etc. Solid reputation for value and durability.
Q: What's the warranty?
A: Typically 1–2 years depending on region. Check your local VEVOR site
for warranty details. Customer service is responsive.
